Choosing the Right Spanish Tutor for You |
|
| When selecting a Spanish tutor, we suggest that you make your decision based on quality rather than price. So below we have listed a few important criteria to look out for when selecting the right tutor for you. |
The Tutor must be a native Spanish Speaker
You would be amazed by how many "tutors" are out there offering to teach subjects in which they are not fully qualified. Some are not even native Spanish speakers and will probably offer to meet you in a coffee shops! A bad tutor can actually do more harm than good and end up destroying a student's confidence in the subject. Hence, make sure the tutor has an advanced degree in their chosen subject, preferably from a top university.
The Tutor must have studied Spanish Literature & Linguistics at College level
Just because a person is can speak Spanish does not mean he or she can actually teach it. An excellent tutor should also have studied Spanish Literature & Linguistics at college-level. They must also possess a deep understanding of the underlying structure of the language in order to provide clear, meaningful explanations to the student.
The Tutor must be fluent in English
A good Spanish tutor must also be fluent in English and should be fully accustomed to the culture here in the U.S. in order to easily relate to the student. You will find that many cheaper, lower quality Spanish tutors will probably only speak broken English. This seriously limits the student's progress and makes the lessons less enjoyable.
Patient professional teaching style
The tutor must help the student to feel comfortable enough to ask questions and make mistakes without feeling self-conscious during the lesson. Hence, the tutor must be patient and pleasant-natured while at the same time encouraging the student to take an active part in each lesson. Remember, although it takes some effort to learn Spanish, it should also be fun!
